I was married to my wife, Phuong, for 33 years. The love of my life. Shockingly Phuong was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 10 years ago. I became a caregiver for my wife. We actively utilized medications, various care methods, and a combination of occupational and speech therapy techniques to slow down Phuong’s progression and improve quality of life for both of us. I read books and attended care classes to better cope with the situation. We both utilized services at Leeza’s Care Connection and Alzheimer’s Los Angeles for support and socialization. Phuong, although needing lots of help with activities of daily living, was very healthy and still asking questions, eating normally, walking just fine and able to interact with the care assistants. Sadly, and unexpectedly Phuong passed away in 2024 from a massive stroke. Phuong had “contented involvement” (a term from the Alzheimer’s L. A. Savy Care Giver class meaning she was calm and involved) and was happy. Phuong was always a kind loving and helpful women and I can hear her asking me to become a HUGS partner. My care giving experience was an absolute nightmare – although it was full of lots of anxiety, panic and stress it was also full of incredible intimacy, love and closeness as well. It taught me to have patience and calm and to be strategic and plan, when possible, to avoid bad situations. I learned about how to improvise and compensate. Most importantly I learned that I could give an awesome shower. Every one’s situation will be unique and different, but I can be an active listener and maybe together we can figure out something to make it a little better. Currently I am also a volunteer Medicare counselor registered with the California department of aging and in training to become both a Medicare and Alzheimer’s Association volunteer educator. I remember how difficult it was when my husband was first diagnosed. Having someone who understands the fear and uncertainty that comes with such a diagnosis is incredibly comforting. It helps to know that you’re not alone. I would love to support another partner or adult child in navigating this new normal. Reach out for availability

I am a heart-centered caregiver, empath, coach, speaker, and psychologist whose focus is transpersonal creative expression. I am certified in neuro-linguistic training (NLP), hypnotherapy, expressive arts, tapping, and active listening. I am a single parent who raised a daughter on her own, and grandmother of a 2-year-old granddaughter. Currently, I am transitioning from the SF Bay Area to southern California to be with family after losing my husband of 32 years in December 2023. I can honestly say, I was out of my depth of understanding what it took to be a 24/7 “boots on the ground” caregiver. Not only was I fighting for my husband’s life, but I was also ensuring a personal battle of my own – feelings of not enough surfaced – not being enough, knowing enough, and doing enough. At times the stress seemed unbearable. I felt alone, sad, angry, and exhausted. Yet, I needed to honor my husband’s life and fight the good fight to give him hope and enliven his spirit so that he felt loved and cared for. That required putting my life on hold. So, I suited up and put one foot in front of the other to navigate the terrain of uncertainty. I did my best. There was no template I could follow that was laid out before me. I was thankful I had family and friends that showered me with love and support that saw me through this trying ordeal. I am here today to offer my experience as a caretaker in whatever form is needed to help and support others through this time of trial and tribulation and to say, “You are not alone.” Reach out for availability

Being a middle child in my family, I have always taken on the role of peacemaker, bringing harmony and understanding to those around me. I believe in the power of empathy, compassion, and kindness in building strong and meaningful relationships with others. I enjoy meeting people from diverse backgrounds and hearing their stories, as I find great value in learning from different perspectives and experiences. One of the things that brings me the most joy is helping others in any way that I can. Whether it's lending a listening ear, offering a helping hand, or simply being there for someone in need, I believe that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's life. I have 2 cats, I love nature and animals and I like to travel because it brings new experiences and adventures. Availability: Mondays-Thursdays, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

I’m the youngest of 7, born prematurely at 26 weeks. I had the most amazing parents. Taking care of them was extremely challenging, but I also consider it a privilege. I made a promise that I would always try to help others going through this difficult journey. I decided to become a HUGS Ambassador because of gratitude. LCC was there when I needed it most and now it’s my turn to help. Availability: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 2-4 PM

I used to be a part of Love On A Leash. A nonprofit where I would visit local convalescent homes with my basset hound. I did this for years with my son. I also started a newsletter at LA County Homeless Shelter, which I called "Let Your Word Be Heard" providing all the residents an opportunity to voice their concerns and encouraging a creative outlet platform with art/poetry. I then began to do one-on-one live-in companionship for a widowed senior who was clinically depressed and overwhelmed with needing to downsize, and I helped assist with keeping him excited about life, working through small goals/baby steps, and enjoying the little things along the way. It was 5 years that I was able to walk him through with a positive, nurturing perspective. Availability: 7 days a week. Anytime.

My other name is "Dylan and Jack's Mom" I have two boys who are young adults now. I have been married for 26 years to my sweetheart, and we have a German Shepherd who is now our third son. I am the most proud of how kind my son is, regardless of all else. I sing in the church choir on Sundays and I am an avid dancer. I stay active by doing Zumba, walking the dog, dancing, and participating in drum circles. Being a caregiver has taught me patience and kindness. As a teenager, I remember my father teaching me the importance that cognitive issues are not their fault and to treat others with dignity. As difficult as it can be, it is rewarding to help those in need. Availability: Contact between 3 - 5 PM PST. Weekdays are best.

It takes a special person to be a caregiver. Assisting my blind brother has been very helpful not just to him but also to myself. It has given me the opportunity to learn how caregiving is much needed in today's time. I've also learned how to care for myself and know that it's okay to put myself first because if I don't take care of myself I want to be able to care for him. Availability: Thursdays, 9 - 11 AM EST
